Deputy Prime Minister signs first bilateral agreement with Jordan
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tonio Borg signed Malta’s first bilateral agreement with Jordan during his visit in this country.
Dr Tonio Borg held talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Naser Jodeh and Finance Minister Bassem Salem. The former accepted an invitation put forward by Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg to visit Malta. In fact, Foreign Minister Naser Jodeh is expected to pay a visit later on this year.
The two countries signed a Convention on the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income. They also agreed to set up a Business Council between the two countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg said that the agreement will help to reduce unnecessary burdens thus facilitating trade between the two countries. It will also help to increase the efforts to combat fiscal evasion. Dr Tonio Borg said that the setting up of a Business Council will help to strengthen commercial ties with Jordan.
Jordan was the last country the Deputy Prime Minister visited during his week in the Middle East. He already visited and concluded agreements with Syria and Lebanon. In Syria, Dr Tonio Borg signed an agreement of political cooperation between the two countries. In Lebanon, Deputy Prime Minister also signed a political agreement between the two countries and a Protocol that amends the current agreement on the avoidance of double taxation.
