Maltese give generously to Italy earthquake victims
An activity was held at Freedom Square in Valletta on Saturday morning to collection donations for the victims of the Abruzzo earthquake in central Italy two weeks ago.
Various people showed their solidarity with the earthquake victims by offering donations and food and clothes items. The activity began at 8.30am and ended at 1pm. The food and clothes items were packed into boxes and loaded into containers which will be shipped to Italy in the coming days.
Other items that were given included toys, nappies, baby milk powder and baby food. Peter Cordina, Director of the Civil Protection Department, said that the public response was good and donations and items will continue to be accepted till next Wednesday.
This activity, named Help Abruzzo, was organised by the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs in coordination with the Civil Protection Department, the Armed Forces of Malta and various voluntary organisations.
